Sleep Cycles: REM vs Non-REM Explained

Sleep is made up of repeating cycles that alternate between Non-REM and REM stages, each playing a unique role in recovery and brain function. Non-REM sleep, especially deep sleep (N3), focuses on physical repair, immune support, and hormone release, while REM sleep is essential for memory consolidation, emotional processing, and cognitive performance. A full night typically includes 4–6 complete cycles, each lasting around 90 minutes. Disruptions such as irregular sleep timing, alcohol, stress, and late-night screen exposure can break these cycles, reducing sleep quality even if total hours seem sufficient. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a dark and cool sleep environment, and avoiding stimulants before bed helps complete full cycles, leading to better recovery, sharper thinking, and improved overall health.
