Sleep & Weight: How Sleep Loss Wrecks Your Metabolism

Lack of quality sleep directly impacts the body’s metabolic system. When sleep drops below 6–7 hours, hunger hormone ghrelin increases while leptin, the hormone responsible for fullness, decreases, leading to constant hunger and cravings for high-calorie foods. Poor sleep also lowers insulin sensitivity, causing the body to store more fat instead of using glucose efficiently for energy. Over time, this contributes to weight gain, increased belly fat, and slower calorie burning. Sleep deprivation is also linked to higher cortisol levels, muscle loss, and reduced resting metabolic rate. Consistent sleep of 7–9 hours, a fixed sleep schedule, reduced late-night eating, and limiting blue light exposure can help restore hormonal balance, improve metabolism, and support long-term weight control.
